Footsie dives after Wall St slump

The FTSE 100 Index today opened more than 100 points lower as investors worldwide faced up to a second day of stock market pain.

The slump of 1.6% came after a major sell-off in China on Tuesday caused the Footsie to drop by its biggest amount for nine months yesterday.

New York’s Dow Jones Industrial Average last night endured its worst decline since the September 11 2001 terror attacks, with markets in Singapore and Australia following suit earlier today.

The FTSE 100 fell by 102.8 points to 6183.3 in early trading, before settling 76.3 points lower at 6209.8.
