Energy consumption in Irish business to rise

Unless industry in Ireland embraces structured energy management techniques and converts to sustainable sources of energy supply, the economy will be less competitive, according to the Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI).

David Taylor, Chief Executive of the SEI, made the comment following the launch of the third annual Sustainable Energy Awards, which recognises businesses demonstrating best practice in energy efficiency in Ireland.

Ireland imports 87% of its primary energy requirement and costs to industry have increased by 29% since 2000, and are likely to continue to increase over the coming decade.

Industry currently accounts for 18% of all energy consumed in Ireland, and current forecasts indicate that consumption will rise with growth in output.

Mr Taylor said: "Over-reliance on traditional fossil fuels will, if left unchecked, create enormous challenges for the future competitiveness of industry."

SEI today launched the third national Sustainable Energy Awards which recognise excellence in energy management in industrial, commercial and public sectors.

Previous winners include Intel, Pfizer Ireland Pharmaceuticals and the HSE North West.
