SIPTU defers decision on future of Liberty Hall
SIPTU has deferred a decision that could have seen one of the Dublin's best-known landmarks - Liberty Hall - being sold off or possibly demolished.
The union was planning to hold a meeting next month to discuss the future of the 15-storey building, which is considered cramped, energy inefficient and badly in need of refurbishment.
However, that meeting has now been deferred indefinitely and SIPTU is expected to retain Liberty Hall as its headquarters for the foreseeable future.
The site of the building has been synonymous with the trade union movement since 1912, when the Irish Transport and General Workers Union was established.
The current 15-storey structure was built in 1965 and continues to dominate the skyline on Dublin's north quays.
