MEAT processors and supermarkets were accused by the new president of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association last night of keeping producer prices below the cost of production.

Gabriel Gilmartin said in his inaugural presidential address at the ICSA annual general meeting in Limerick that supermarkets need to reflect on the meaning of corporate social responsibility when they remain unconcerned about the dire straits of most Irish farmers.

“We want fair trade for Irish farmers. Fair trade is not just about coffee and bananas. It’s time it started at home with our beef and lamb,” he said.
