Mayo's McHale Park set for upgrade

The Mayo county board may have failed to lure John O'Mahony back to manage the county's footballers, but they are on the ball on another matter - their stadium.

The westerners have set about upgrading their home venue of McHale Park in Castlebar to a 40,000 all-seater stadium, costing upwards of €6m.

The ball was set rolling by the recent purchase of the ground from the McHale club for €1.5m on a 50-year lease, as well as a once-off contribution from the board to the club of up to €50,000.

McHale Park was the venue for Shrule-Glencorrib's 2-15 to 1-8 hammering of Breaffy last Sunday in the Mayo championship quarter-finals.

Conor Mortimer hit 1-8 in all for Shrule, showing his undoubted class despite an indifferent All-Ireland campaign with the county.
