The chairman of the Charleton tribunal has said that he needs to know when gardaí discovered that a false allegation of sexual abuse containing incorrect information was "a silly error that was a denigration of someone’s reputation", reports Gerard Cunningham.

The tribunal is examining claims that allegations of sexual abuse were used as part of a campaign to smear and undermine the reputation of garda whistle blower Sgt Maurice McCabe.
