More than 1,500 Australians are to set to be made feel at home today when they disembark from a liner in Cobh, Co Cork.
The town is putting on a special “Australia Day” to mark the arrival of the Sea Princess, which is on a 10- day around the world cruise out of Sydney.
Cobh Tourism is rolling out the red carpet for the visitors from Down Under, with free, non-stop entertainment starting at 11am in the town’s waterfront promenade. This will include traditional music and Irish Dancing and the tourists can amble through a number of market stalls.
While many of the passengers will take half-day excursions, many more will enjoy the wide variety of attractions that are just a stone’s throw away from the ship.
A visit to Spike Island from where many convicts were held captive before being transported to Australia will be a must for many passengers as will the “Blessing of the Bonnets” ceremony in Cobh Heritage Centre at 6pm to honour all convict women and children transported to Australia.
