Games of August 2015

Summer may be the big time for blockbuster movies but its the latter part of the year which sees the major gaming releases, gearing up for the big rush of Christmas.

Games of August 2015

That doesn't mean the earlier months are entirely empty, but you might see more independent games getting a push, which can be a refreshing change from the massive marketing budgets of the biggest franchises. That means there's a lot of originality on offer, so let's dive in!

Dates shown are the earliest appearance for the game - actual releases vary by console and region.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture 11/08 - PS4This is a game which takes place in Shropshire during the apocalypse. Yes Shropshire in the UK. It's a story-driven exploration game from the makers of Dear Esther and it looks like a mixture of quirkiness, insanity and some really beautiful environments. Coming exclusively to PlayStation, which we're going to say a lot.

Goat Simulator 11/08 - PS4, PS3In this game, you are a goat. As a goat you can do whatever you like but most of it will usually involve crashing into things with sickeningly over the top physics. Sometimes you can fly, but you pretty much always crash while doing that too. Basically its insane and broken on purpose and was never supposed to be a real game, but it is!

Toy Soldiers: War Chest 11/08 - PS4, Xbox One, PCThis is like a battle on your carpet with small plastic toys made into an all out digital war! For the best experience you can buy extra packs which unlock characters from the universes of He-Man, GI Joe and... Assassin's Creed. Well it is published by Ubisoft. This is looking like a lot of fun, especially with the graphics of next gen consoles.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons 12/08 - PS4, Xbox One Originally released only on the Xbox 360 back in 2013, Brothers is the story of two young boys who have to go on a perilous journey to save their father's life. The unique slant of the game is that you control both brothers at once, forcing you to think laterally to complete puzzles with the two controller sticks. It's also a beautiful story and well worth checking out.

Volume 18/08 - PS4, PSVita, PC From the maker of Thomas Was Alone (which is an excellent game with a unique sense of humour) comes new game Volume. It's a weird take on the Robin Hood myth, with our hero taking on a shady corporation by broadcasting their crimes to the world. There's stealth, uncanny graphics and voice over work by Danny Wallace and Gollum himself Andy Serkis.

Dishonored Definitive Edition 25/08 - PS4, Xbox OneThe brilliant 2011 action/stealth/murdering game gets a new release, bringing the graphics up to modern spec and also including all DLC into the bargain. If you've never played it before you're in for a real treat as Dishonored offers you up complete freedom in how you play and an impressively designed world to go on stealthy in.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition 25/08 - Xbox OneAnother re-release, this time going all the way back to 2006 to rejuvenate one of the most influential action titles of all time. Gears of War was the killer app of the Xbox 360 and its being brought back with massively updated graphics and new content. Naturally there's also a new game on the way, with Gears 4 due for release at the end of 2016.

Madden NFL 16 25/08 - PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 Get your American football fix with another yearly dose of Madden. The series has been running for a staggering 27 years now, making it older than many of the people who play it! Odell Beckham Jr is the cover star for NFL 2016 and EA is promising a better looking game, as well as the return of EA Trax so you can expect great tunes as well.

Until Dawn 25/08 - PS4Another PS4 exclusive - this time it's a real-life horror movie you can play through on your console. A bunch of attractive teens head to an abandoned cabin in the woods - what could go wrong!? Well a lot actually and its up to you to take control and help these kids survive... or even give them a little nudge towards horrifically nasty deaths.
