Glow from inside out

YOU’VE heard about that pregnancy glow but instead you have an upset tummy, acne for the first time in years and your favourite moisturiser makes your skin itch.

Glow from inside out

As the festive season approaches making simple changes to your diet can help you look and feel your best.

“Your skin is an outward reflection of what is going on internally and a good eating pattern will not only nourish your skin from within but also help sort out digestive problems like constipation,” says nutritional therapist and mum-of-two, Sarah Brereton.

Essential fats (EFAs) should be the foundation of your pregnancy diet says Sarah, who is nutrition adviser for Udo’s Oil. As well as providing nutrients for your baby’s developing brain, EFAs, particularly Omega 6 found in flax and other seed oils, keeps skin supple and soft, helping to prevent stretchmarks and dry, flaky sensitive patches.

Buy a packet of crunchy linseeds or other seed mixes and stir into soups, salads and smoothies, along with some seasonal berries. Your diet should include lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. A mix of oat bran and porridge is an ideal way to start the day, providing slow release carbs and soluble fibre.

Snacks like Brazil nuts, almonds or pumpkin seeds contain zinc that boosts the immune system and skin health. They also contain magnesium to help with muscle cramps. Eating little and often also puts less pressure on your digestive system. Drinking lots of water will keep everything moving and hydrate skin.

“To increase your seed oil intake, I suggest taking two tablespoons of Udo’s Oil a day with food, such as smoothies, soups and yoghurts. A convenient alternative are Udo’s Oil capsules,” Sarah advises.

Other seasonal tips include:

¦ Make sure you have a light snack before going out, to stop you feeling hungry and reaching for party nibbles.

¦ Try caffeine-free Roobios tea which can be taken with or without milk for a warming hydrating drink.

¦ Cinnamon is a seasonal spice and recommended for balancing blood sugar levels and reducing cravings.

Add a teaspoon to stewed apple or your morning porridge.
