VIDEO: See why it’s okay to talk about men’s mental health

Simon Bracken, a Masters student in Journalism at CIT, has decided to investigate the problem with a touching and informative documentary on how men can mind their mental health.

Driven by an interest in mental well-being and a determination to discover how it can be improved among men, Simon has filmed, edited and self-released 'Men's Mental Health - It's Okay To Talk About It'.

In the video, Simon discovers how the participants at the Men's Shed in Carrigaline are promoting good mental health through projects and activities.

He also talks to experts including Professor Ella Arensman, Research Director at the National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF) and Michelle Duffy from Cork Samaritans about the causes of mental health issues in males and the ways to prevent them.

The documentary has been released to coincide with National Suicide Prevention Week and World Suicide Prevention Day, which is today.

According to the latest CSO figures approximately 10 Irish people take their lives every week - eight of which are men.

The Samaritans has published a report on male suicide which highlights factors such as unemployment and masculinity as contributory factors to the high rates.

Central Statistics Office figures show that an estimated 507 people died by suicide in Ireland in 2012 and Cork City was identified as the location with the highest suicide rates in the country.

To mark National Suicide Prevention Week a seminar will be hosted by Cork Samaritans and the NSRF on 'Responding to suicidal crisis' this Thursday at Cork City Hall.

Visit for more details on the event which will be launched by Minister of State Kathleen Lynch.
