University in shock as student dies during class

The woman from Castleville, Castletroy, Limerick, was with her classmates when she collapsed in a room at the college’s Kemmy School of Business at about 1.30pm.

It is believed the students were attending marketing presentations.

The college’s doctor was at her side within a short space of time. Paramedics were on site shortly afterwards. The university’s priest was also present.

The woman’s classmates were sent out of the room to allow for treatment. She was taken to the University Hospital Limerick but she could not be resuscitated.

It is understood her parents arrived at the scene and were present while their youngest daughter was being tended to.

Classmates who witnessed the tragedy were said to be devastated.

The university said it would not comment, but said there is a protocol for those affected by the woman’s death through its counsellors and chaplaincy service.

Students’ union president Emma Porter said: “It is an absolute tragedy to lose someone so young. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this terrible time. We would also like to remind all our students of the support services available to them on campus to help them in this stressful time. The chaplaincy, counselling service and our welfare office are available to all students, please do not hesitate to contact any of them.”

A UL spokesperson said counselling will be offered to those affected by the incident.
