Cork girl’s winning Doodle 4 Google to be seen by millions
Mia Buckley, 12, a pupil at Summercove National School in Kinsale, was yesterday announced as the winner of this year’s Doodle 4 Google competition.
She beat 74 regional finalists to secure her picture’s place on the Google Ireland homepage on Easter Monday, March 28.
Mia was yesterday presented with her awards, a €5,000 scholarship towards her third-level studies and a Chromebook, in a special grand final ceremony in Google’s headquarters in Dublin.
Summercove National School will also receive a €10,000 technology grant while her teacher, Ms Hallissey, will also receive a Chromebook.
Students were asked to submit illustrations on the theme ‘Ireland Is…’, which were to show what Ireland means to them.
Mia’s winning entry, entitled ‘Ireland is a land so green’, uses images of farm life, as well as flowers, sports, and music to recreate the Google logo with an Irish twist.
“Ireland is a land so green with grazing cattle to be seen. Steeped in rich history with music and sports so fine. I love this Irish home of mine,” Mia said in her entry.
Ronan Harris, head of Google in Ireland, thanked all the students who submitted an entry. “Mia’s doodle really caught our eye and she really captured Ireland’s rural heritage, as well as our love for music and sports,” he said.
“She did a fantastic job incorporating the Google logo using vibrant colours and a clear design.“
A panel of judges, including artist master and Song of the Sea director Tomm Moore, had selected 75 finalists for a public poll in which 271,000 votes were cast.
The picture with the highest number of votes in each of the five class groups made it through to the overall final round and the Google Doodle team then chose the overall winner.
The 75 regional finalists’ doodles can be seen on google.ie/doodle4google.
