Bono may win Gorbi award for ‘changing the world’
Love him or hate him, it seems when awards for being brilliant are to be doled out, Mr Hewson is always on a shortlist somewhere.
So it is again as the veteran musician has been nominated for the inaugural ‘Mikhail Gorbachev: the man who changed the world’ awards.
Gorbachev himself has said all nine nominees were chosen because they have changed the world in some way or another.
“The people nominated for the inaugural Gorbachev Awards have already made a significant contribution to the world and changed the way we live our lives today.
“Selecting just nine people has been very hard and we are delighted that the people we have nominated bring such a diverse range of skills and achievements to the awards, and the values the awards stand for.”
The criteria seems pretty obvious and looking down the list, there are some heavy hitters for Bono to contend with
Those battling it out for the award with the Dubliner include Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web, and Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google.
Both things, everyone would agree, were fairly world-changing creations.
Also included are Martin Cooper, an engineer and inventor who made the world’s first mobile telephone call in 1973, another seismic contribution to the modern world.
Bono is included in the rather vaguely titled category of ‘contribution to the development of the culture of an open world’.
The U2 frontman’s latest contribution to world culture is the controversial €47 million musical about Spider-Man.
With that on his CV, he must definitely be in with a shout.
