A controlled explosion has been carried out on a bag close to the finish area of the Olympic cycling road race, Rio 2016 organisers have confirmed.

A controlled explosion has been carried out on a bag close to the finish area of the Olympic cycling road race, Rio 2016 organisers have confirmed.

Sources have told the Press Association the bag was dropped from a window of a building near the finish line area and subsequently destroyed by police.

There is no suggestion there was any volatile device inside the bag.

A Rio 2016 spokesperson said: "The security services found a suspicious package close to the cycle road race finish line in Copacabana and as a precaution decided to perform a controlled explosion. There is no impact to the race, which is ongoing."

The venue media manager at Fort Copacabana, where the cycling road races start and finish, said: "Forca Nacional found an object and did the regular procedure which was destroy it.

"It was outside the security cordon."
