McIlroy: Olympics participation 'complicated'

Rory McIlroy has today revealed that his participation at the Olympic games was complicated by politics.

The Northern Irish golfer had decided to represent Ireland, rather than Great Britain, at the recent Rio Olympics but pulled out before the event citing concerns over the Zika virus.

However, the four-time major winner has elaborated on his decision slightly by suggesting there was more to it than the threat of contracting an illness.

Speaking in Shanghai ahead of the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament, he said: "The participation in the Olympics, for me it's just a little more complicated than for some other people, (because of) where I'm from and the whole politics of the thing."

"It's a difficult subject for me," he added.
