QUIRKY WORLD...Mandatory Kim Jong-un haircut rumours cut short

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s distinctive hairstyle has become a major talking point on the internet, thanks to a viral report that every male university student in the capital is under orders to get a buzz just like it.

However, it appears the barbers of Pyongyang are not exactly sharpening their scissors. Recent visitors to the country say they have seen no evidence of any mass haircutting and North Korea watchers smell another imaginative, but uncorroborated rumour.

USA: California’s historic drought is presenting a new opportunity for gold seekers.

Low water levels have led to a mini-gold rush in the same Sierra Nevada foothills that drew legions of fortune seekers from around the world in the mid-1800s, as amateur prospectors dig for riverbed riches in spots that have been out of reach for decades.

One of the worst droughts in California’s history has prompted the state and federal governments to cut water supplies to farms and cities. It has also left rivers and streams with dangerously low water levels, imperilling fish and wildlife.

DIVORCE HOTSPOTS

ENGLAND: People who live near the seaside may be more prone to divorce.

The divorce hotspots of England and Wales are all coastal areas, according to a new Office for National Statistics report. The local authority with the highest proportion of divorcees was Blackpool, where 13.1% of the population were divorced, the latest census figures show.

In Hastings, 12.8% of people were divorced, while 12.2% of those in Torbay had been through a marriage breakdown. Weymouth and Portland, Thanet, the Isle of Wight, Gosport, Eastbourne, Great Yarmouth, and Worthing made up the top 10.

TWEET WATCH

USA: Watch what you tweet, sports fans. Security firms are turning to social media to figure out whether there is an increased risk of fans storming the court or becoming aggressive during basketball events.

US officials said the practice of watching online chatter before a big game can help them tap into the mindset of a crowd, and help them make decisions about how many guards to deploy at a venue.

Whelan Security admitted it checked online chatter to find out if fans were planning to storm the field and steal souvenirs at a basketball game.

CHUBBY CANINES

ENGLAND: Junk food and fatty treats are fuelling a “tragic” obesity crisis for British pets, research has shown.

Owners are giving more than 10 million animals high-calorie foods including takeaways, biscuits, chips, and even alcohol, according to the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals.

Almost nine out of 10 (87%) give pets treats, despite the fact that 91% realise the resulting obesity can reduce their pet’s lifespan.

Dog calls 911

USA: When emergency dispatchers in Nebraska’s Sarpy County picked up a recent call, all they heard were the sounds of breathing and scratching. Dispatchers were worried — until they learned the noises were coming from a dog who dialled 911.

The dog’s owner, Melissa Acosta, says she thought her 900g Japanese Chin, Sophie, was trying to curl up next to her on the couch, when she realised Sophie was scratching at Acosta’s smartphone with her paw.

Acosta says the whole thing is “a little embarrassing”.

Sophie, of course, had no comment.

SURPRISE GUEST

ENGLAND: A turtle which only lives in freshwater in America has been discovered on a beach in Britain.

The yellow-bellied slider turtle, which is believed to have been abandoned after it grew too big to be a pet, was found by a couple as they went for a walk along a beach near Fareham, Hampshire. After initially thinking the turtle was dead, they contacted the Blue Reef Aquarium in Portsmouth when they realised it was still breathing.
