Peaches’ final column: ‘I had the perfect life’

In a poignant last column for Mother & Baby magazine, the 25-year-old — who had two young sons, Astala and Phaedra with her second husband, musician Tom Cohen — wrote “being a mum is the best part”.
In only her second column for the& magazine, published yesterday, Bob Geldof’s eldest daughter revealed she was rejoicing in happiness from motherhood after her “wild past”.
She wrote just before turning 25: “I lived a life of wanton wanderlust. With fun-loving friends from Los Angeles to London, I was lost in a haze of youth and no responsibilities.
“Other than work there was nothing stopping me from having constant fun. But it was becoming boring, I wanted an anchor — I craved it. And when I had two wailing, smiling, joyful little blobs of waddling pink flesh they became my entire existence and saved me from one of pure apathy.
“Everything else was nothingness — I had the perfect life, two babies who loved me more than anything. It was and is bliss.
“However, this new earth-mother me came with an unexpected consequence — I found myself friendless. My five closest friends were understanding… but many others revealed themselves to be of the fair-weather variety.
“Once I couldn’t go out… they didn’t want to know. The idea that I didn’t want a nanny didn’t seem to register, nor that doing night-feeds and waking up at 6am doesn’t factor in well with a wine- soaked dinner...
“And no one seemed to want to ask me about my babies, when I wanted to gush endlessly about them. It hurt me. I felt alienated and abandoned. Had I made a mistake?”
Then, she wrote, one day Astala and Phaedra came in giggling and kissing her.
“Phaedy gave me a wet kiss and both collapsed giggling into my arms, looking at me with pure love. In that magic moment, all my doubts were erased. Everything else was nothingness and it just … didn’t matter. I had the perfect life… It was and is bliss.
“Now with a newfound group of mummy mates, both locally and online, all with the exact same struggles and issues and who don’t question if my child flings food at their hair or care if there’s a screaming fit in the middle of the street — I’m happier than ever.
“My real old friends have stuck by me and connect me to my old life (I sometimes forget I’m only 24), treating me to nights out that let me forget about dirty nappies at least for a minute. So I’ve achieved a sort of perfect balance. Right now life is good. And being a mum is the best part of it.”
Peaches was found dead at her home in Wrotham, Kent, after officers were called “following a report of concern for the welfare of a woman”, said a Kent Police spokesman.
He added: “Officers were called to the 25-year-old’s home in Fairseat Lane, Wrotham at 1.35pm on Monday, 7 April, 2014. Peaches was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The death is being treated as a non-suspicious, but an unexplained sudden death.
“Officers are working to establish the circumstances and will be compiling a report of their findings for the coroner.”
Peaches was a prolific tweeter and the final message she sent on Sunday was a picture of her as a child with her mother, with the message “Me and my mum”.
Her body has been transferred to Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford, where the examination will take place, Kent County Council said. A decision on whether to hold an inquest will be made depending on the final results of the post mortem, which could take several weeks.
It has been claimed that officers searching Peaches’ five-bedroom home found no hard drugs, no suicide note, and no visible signs of injury, The Sun reported.
