Homeless boy becomes shining light

A young homeless boy has become a symbol of inspiration after he was pictured using the light from a McDonald’s restaurant to do his homework.

The picture of Daniel Cabrera was taking by medical student Joyce Torrefranca, who spotted him on the pavement in Manilla, Philippines.

She posted the picture on Facebook, and it soon went viral after hitting a nerve with thousands of people.

Joyce told Rappler: ”As a student, it gave me an inspiration to work harder.

“I’m fortunate my parents were able to send me to school.

“I seldom go to coffee shops to study, but this kid just hit me.

“You really don’t need much, you just have to be determined and focused on the things that you want to achieve.“

Daniel was left homeless after his home burnt down.

His father also died in the fire. The boy is determined to get an education despite having to beg on the streets with his mother.

His teacher Rosalina Detuya, was full of praise, saying: “He is also intelligent and actually answers during class discussion, he really participates.”

Daniel said he wants to complete his education. “I think I want to be a policeman....I also want to be a doctor,” he said.

The manager of the McDonalds outlet said staff often gave the family water.

She said they promised to give Daniel a toy if he showed them a homework paper with a star.
