Christie’s to auction Picasso piece for £1,000
More than 50 paintings and sculptures will be sold at Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale on Tuesday, when millions of pounds will change hands.
Among the works offered for sale are a series of large Monet canvases estimated to fetch €12.6m and a Picasso portrait painted shortly before his 90th birthday expected to fetch €9m.
A cheaper alternative will be available two days later when Picador, a plate by Picasso, is estimated to fetch around £1,000 at a ceramics sale.
Jay Vincze, international director and head of the Impressionist and Modern Art Department at the London auction house, said: “Christie’s established the highest total ever achieved in one week for the Impressionist and Modern category in the May New York sales. We are pleased to build on this success by offering today’s informed and intelligent collectors a diverse and dynamic group of important works, to meet the market’s eclectic collecting tastes.
“The evening sale leads a week of Impressionist & Modern Art and 20th century Modern British & Irish Art auctions at Christie’s.”
