Banksy originals sold on the street for just $60

Banksy, the British graffiti artist causing a sensation in New York City, says he sold his artwork over the weekend for only $60 (€44) apiece.

Banksy wrote on his website that he had set up a stall in Central Park on Saturday with original signed works.

But the secretive artist warned: “That stall will not be there again today.”

The website features a photo and video of the pop-up stall with a sign that read: “Spray Art. $60.”

His works typically sell for thousands of dollars.

A number of people are seen buying the works and getting hugs from an elderly man working the stall. It’s not clear who the man is. Banksy refuses to give his real name.

His work has been turning up on the city’s streets and all over social media in recent weeks.

According to ABC News, just three people took advantage of the one-day sale, with passersby assuming they were knock-offs.

The British graffiti artist has gone from daubing the streets of his home city Bristol to becoming the world’s most famous spray-paint satirist, with a number of celebrity fans.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt famously spent $1m on his work after “discovering” it at an LA art auction, and Banksy’s Keep It Spotless was sold through Sotheby’s auction house for $1.8m in 2008.

The first sale came at 3.30pm, according to the video, when a woman bought two small canvases after negotiating the price down to $30 each.

She was followed, half an hour later, by a woman from New Zealand who also bought two pieces.

But the luckiest passerby was a man from Chicago, who spent $240 on four original Banksy canvases.

“I just need something for the walls,” the man said, according to the video.

Banksy has been leaving new works on walls and doors around New York City, before tipping treasure hunts among fans by posting photographs and approximate locations for the paintings on his website.

One artwork was discovered by a group of youngsters who have covered it with a cardboard box and are charging anyone interested $5 to view it.
