Pleasant journey on west Clare steam train

RECENTLY I was happy to travel on the reconstructed 2.5km of the old West Clare railway line at Moyasta junction on the Slieve Galeon steam train.

This steam train has been resurrected having been replaced by a diesel engine in 1954, seven years before the closure of the line.

I travelled on the train on the day before its official launch on August 12.

It was a very nostalgic occasion and I sincerely hope the proposed line extension to Kilkee will materialise by next year. Moreover, as the Ffestiniog railway in Wales took more than10 years to reconstruct and given the enormous benefits accruing to the locality, it should be a great incentive to the people of the region to see the west Clare railway project through.
