Another blow - Cork Airport

CORK Airport seems to be suffering a death by a thousand cuts. Aer Lingus Regional has confirmed that it will reduce the number of flights on its Newcastle and Glasgow routes this summer. The changes at Cork will facilitate a service from Shannon to Birmingham.

Another blow - Cork Airport

However, a twice-weekly links to Rennes and Jersey from Cork are to be reopened. New services to Cardiff, Ibiza, and Prague were announced recently but freight services cease at Cork from June 1 when they will be transferred to Shannon.

Shannon Airport has enjoyed a new lease of life since it achieved independence and is to be congratulated for that wonderful achievement. The fact that it was relatively debt-free and enjoys a €38m annual rental income contributed to that revival.

Cork is not so lucky and it requires an almost irrational degree of optimism to believe that this decline will be reversed without confronting the debt issue. A stitch in time saves nine may not be a widely recognised economic theory but it most certainly applies in this instance.
