The iPod is dead - a moment's silence as its removed from the Apple Store

The iPod has been removed from the main page on the Apple Store for the first time since it was created in 2001. And that's kind of a big deal for the millions upon millions who have been enjoying portable tunes for well over a decade.

And it's also kind of not a big deal at all, for a whole heap of reasons. Chief among them is the fact that Apple just doesn't sell that many iPods anymore, with just 2.6 million of them sold in the third quarter of 2014, the last time figures were reported. In the same period, they sold in excess of 35 million iPhones.
