The Revenant is the new film by Alejandro G. Inarritu. If that name isn't familiar with you, he's the chap who walked away with a Best Director Oscar for Birdman earlier this year.

His follow up is an incredibly gritty drama about a fur trapped (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is left for dead after a bear attack by his supposed friends, including Tom Hardy, Lukas Haas and Irishman Domhnall Glesson. DiCaprio survives against all odds and goes on a bloody trail of revenge.

The first trailer for The Revenant is here, and it's a breathlessly exciting look at the film.

Wow, that's a unique way to sell your picture.

The whole film won't be fabricated as a single film this time like Birman was but it seems the director and returning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki are keeping the shots wide and the cuts long for the many scenes of carnage. And DiCaprio is right there close up in every frame, looking like a feral ferocious thing and trying desperately to survive.

For the facial hair alone he should be up for some kind of award but with the film set to debut towards the end of 2015 DiCaprio should again be in the running for Oscar season. And it's about time the seriously talented actor finally won himself an Academy Award. He's 40 years old now and has been giving commanding performances since the tender age of 19 in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

Revenant is a term used to describe a re-animated corpse or a ghost who comes back to haunt the living - a pretty good description of the lead character here. And despite this being an outlandish tale, its actually based on the life of famed frontiersman Hugh Glass who was born to Irish parents in Pennsylvania around 1780 and survived some serious ordeals.

The Reveant releases in the US on the 25th of December 2015 and in Ireland on the 15th of January 2016.
