Jurassic World is a new trilogy

Jurassic World was a surprisingly massive success for Universal last year, and it's just the beginning.

Jurassic World is a new trilogy

New director J.A. Bayona is taking over the helm from Colin Trevorrow and he's getting ready to shoot in a few short months. It turns out that there are big plans for this new take on the franchise, and that includes building it as a trilogy.

Bayona is out doing press at TIFF for his new film A Monster Calls and chatted to Latino Review about the plans for this Jurassic World.

"The whole ‘Jurassic World’ is a trilogy that Colin Trevorrow has envisioned. We’re writing the second chapter, and it’s very interesting where he’s leading the story. I grew up watching Steven Spielberg movies and I love those movies and the legacy, so it’s a question of being truthful to the legacy and at the same time, bringing new stuff that people will appreciate. We are still six months ahead of shooting, and so far, so good. It’s very exciting right now."

It's no big surprise that Universal would want to put a few of these movies into production but actually confirming it as a trilogy is a different matter. This pretty much confirms that the story is going to be deeply connected across these films, and hopefully there's an overarching plot that takes threads from the first film and extends it to a big finale.

From what we've already seen in Jurassic World there are a few hints for where things might be going, especially in terms of the subplot about selling these genetically re-engineered dinosaurs for potential military use. It's up to the creative folks to figure out how that's going to work.

Jurassic World 2 is set for release in summer 2018.
