Peter Dinklage dropped from Destiny - here's why
Back when the game launched in September 2014, people were all kinds of excited about the fact that Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage was providing the voice of a critical character called Ghost. This was a robotic companion who helped you with all sorts of things but people criticised the limp vocal performance (we thought it was ok) and the lack of story content in the game kind of made the character feel extraneous.
Developers Bungie are out to address some of those issues with the upcoming third expansion pack, The Taken King - due on the 15th of September. It brings a host of new areas, raids, missions, multiplayer, weapons and more, as well as a focus on story which we haven't seen to date. There will be many more cut scenes and the character of Ghost will be given a more central role, accompanying the player and feeding them information about the world.
One big piece of news is that Ghost will no longer be voiced by Dinklage instead being voiced by veteran voice star Nolan North. And that's down to a very simple reason - availability:
"Dinklage was awesome to work with but we needed to work with someone who is more available," said Destiny exec producer Mark Noseworthy. "Nolan is a pro, this is his thing. "You can just call him up and say 'hey, next week we're doing this internal play test and it would be great to get some Ghost dialogue in there'. And he's available."
It also seems that North will be going back and re-recording all of Dinklage's voicework to date, erasing the Game of Thrones star from Destiny entirely. And maybe that's no bad thing, especially with the great voice work North has done in the past.
The Taken King will also reorganise the quests from the first year of Destiny to make it feel more cohesive - adding a tracker for story progression and overall making the title more attractive to those who like a little story with their shooting. Oh and there's the little matter that it will include an expanded role for the very awesome Nathan Fillion as Cayde-6.
We're looking forward to hearing what North brings to the role when the expansion launches on September 15th 2015 - will the 'what Wizards comes from the Moon' line be back?!
