Ireland can be surprise packet, says Emmanuel Petit

French legend Emmanuel Petit reckons Ireland can spring a surprise in Group E of this summer’s European Championships.
Ireland can be surprise packet, says Emmanuel Petit

ā€œThe gap between the biggest countries in football is not that big anymore so if Ireland play as a group and with fighting spirit and take their chances when it comes on the pitch, they can do something.

"The fact the first game for Ireland is against Sweden is the perfect chance to start well.

ā€œIbrahimoviĀ“c hates to receive a kick during a game. That gets on his nerves and sometimes he loses his control and focus.

"I’m not saying the defenders have to kick him all of the time but just play as typical Irish defenders, with great spirit and great aggression.ā€

Although his own nation’s draw has been favourable, Petit fears for France because of a combination of factors, including the Benzema controversy, the pressure of playing at home and questions over form and fitness of key players.

In fact, Petit traces the problems afflicting the national team right back to that infamous ā€˜Hand Of Gaul’ night in Paris when France beat Ireland in a World Cup play-off in hugely controversial circumstances.

ā€œA lot of people, especially former players - I was one of them - we were so ashamed to qualify in that way,ā€ he says. ā€œ

A lot asked FIFA for a replay, but they say ā€˜no’. When you look at FIFA right now, we can understand why.ā€

However, he thinks the FAI were wrong to accept Sepp Blatter’s €5 million.

ā€œI’s a good compensation but I think it was the whole country who lost in this case. I wouldn’t take the money. What has been done is a shame for sport.ā€

Meanwhile FAI High Performance Director, Ruud Dokter, has been given a new five-year contract.

The extension means the Dutchman, who joined the association in 2013 from the Dutch FA, will continue his work on the Player Development and Emerging Talent programmes as well as other initiatives until 2020.

ā€œIt is important for me to say that in the two and a half years I’ve been here I feel that so much has been accomplished and I didn’t hesitate for a second to renew my contract with the FAI,ā€ he said.

ā€œThere are many challenges ahead and we are focused on continuing to make improvements to the development of players.

ā€œWe’ve achieved much already including rolling out the first two recommendations of the FAI Player Development Plan, improving the Emerging Talent Programme structures, and the completion of the FAI Women’s Strategic Plan 2015-18.

ā€œI see many opportunities. I’m looking forward to the coming years with the FAI.ā€
