Major drifter Discoteca defies the odds

A major market drifter, Discoteca defied the odds when completing a hurdling hat-trick for Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown House Stud in the jogforjockeys.ie Hurdle in Bellewstown yesterday.

Odds-on favourite in the morning, the four-year-old was easy to back on-course before being sent off the 11/8 jolly and, in a tactical race, he came through under Keith Donoghue in the closing stages to get the better of Dibella by a head.

“He wouldn’t walk on that ground,” stated Elliott afterwards. “But, when the race cut up, we decided to let him take his chance. Keith said he hated the ground and couldn’t jump well out of it. He’ll be entered for the Galway Hurdle now. He’s a far better horse on better ground.”

Ryan Treacy (18) from Co. Fermangh won’t forget his visit to Bellewstown in a hurry — he triumphed on Oliver Brady’s One Cool Shabra in the concluding Panda Amateur Handicap before receiving a total of twenty-one days of suspensions for a combination of offences.

Treacy was banned for seven days for using his whip improperly and with excessive frequency and picked-up a fourteen-day ban improper riding.

Co. Kilkenny trainers Dick Donohoe and John Nicholson savoured success in the flat action.

Donohoe struck with six-year-old mare Happy Anniversary (Joseph O’Brien) in the Tote Jackpot Handicap and confirmed that she’ll fulfil her engagement in an apprentice handicap at Leopardstown on Thursday.

Nicholson has Galway in his sights for Knockcroghery which, ridden by Pat Smullen, held the strong late challenge of Cinderella Story in the Collierstown Handicap.

Local trainer Ger Lyons won the five-runner Glebe House Stud Handicap with the Emmet McNamara-ridden Boom To Bust, prompting the trainer’s brother to comment: “He won his maiden here on firm ground and has now won on heavy. He has been a great servant and will go for more of the same.”

Maynooth-based trainer John Carr saddled first and second in the three-mile handicap hurdle as Dunroe Boy, fourth here on Saturday night and ridden by Ian McCarthy, held the late effort of Turnonthegas.

* Gary Carroll was suspended for two racedays, for careless riding, on Lady Lyrath, runner-up to Happy Anniversary in the Tote Jackpot Handicap.
