ATHLETICS: Tobin overcomes effects of virus to ease to victory

Despite having to miss a number of recent races due to illness, Sean Tobin showed he is getting back into top form with an easy victory at the Aviva/Munster Schools Cross-Country at the WIT complex on the outskirts of Waterford city yesterday.

Retaining the title he won last year at CIT, the High School, Clonmel, athlete admitted he still wasn’t recovered from the tonsillitis which forced him to miss the European Junior Cross-Country back in December.

“It was a really tough course today and I haven’t been able to train this past week as the virus came back to me again,” he explained.

“I ran this today mainly for the team but hope now to aim for the AAI Nationals in two weeks time with the world juniors in March the main aim.”

Kyle Larkin of Ardscoil Rís, Limerick, stayed with Tobin in the early stages of the four large laps which made up the 6000m course but eventually had to settle for second, around 100 metres behind the winner.

Michael Carey won the battle for third place to ensure High School, Clonmel took the team title ahead of last year’s winners, Douglas Community School.

Jessica Coyne of Crescent Comprehensive, Limerick, who was second last year in the intermediate race, moved away after one lap of the senior girl’s 2,500m for a clear-cut victory.

The winner of that intermediate race 12 months ago, Aisling Quinn of Ursuline, Waterford, retained her title with ease ahead of Eileen Rafter and in one of the best finishes of the day, Fiona Everard of MICC, Dunmanway came with a late run to just get across the line ahead of Aisling Kelly from St Joseph’s in Spanish Point.

Fearghal Curtin again showed his class in winning the junior boys 2,500m and also lead his Midleton CBS colleagues to team honours.

After a number of years out of the limelight, Coláiste Chríost Rí from Cork took the overall boys trophy, just a point ahead of Douglas Community School who had dominated in the recent past. St Augustine’s, Dungarvan, were the best overall in the girls.
