Leahy strikes late for Midleton

Midleton CBS 0-11 CBS HS Clonmel 0-10
Gary Leahy’s injury-time winner won a disappointing Harty Cup clash for three-time champions Midleton CBS at Fraher Field yesterday.

The captain collected a sideline, fended off the Clonmel chasers before dissecting the uprights. The sides were tied seven times before the Killeagh wing forward intervened.

Cork minor John Looney managed four points from play for the winners with Kevin O’Sullivan and Sean O’Connor holding firm in defence. Tipperary minor Ross Peters (0-7) did cause disruption for Clonmel and inter-county colleague Paul Maher led a sturdy half-back line. The High School shaded a cagey first half hour (0-6 to 0-5). Kevin O’Sullivan acted as sweeper for Midleton and cleared plenty of ball but Paul Maher disrupted attacks at the other side. John Looney carried Midleton’s sole attacking threat. He posted the opener within 32 seconds and added a super solo on 11 mins.

Clonmel adjusted much better. Ross Peters impressed at full-forward and converted five frees. Matt Barlow also landed a corker from 60 metres as they moved 0-6 to 0-2 ahead. Midleton recorded five first-half wides and went 16 minutes without a score but hit three on the trot nearing the break.

Midfielder Brendan McCarthy rounded off a slick move involving Looney and Gary Leahy on 27 minutes. Leahy stroked over from 50 metres before a long-range O’Sullivan free narrowed the deficit to one.

Two quick-fire points from half-time substitute Garan Manley and Looney on the restart slipped Midleton in front (0-7 to 0-6).

Peters remained a menace despite missing two frees. The captain crafted a point from play and then Maher judged a free from his own 65 to regain the lead. Six second-half wides hurt Clonmel’s challenge. Two frees from Kevin O’Sullivan and Looney’s fourth white flag nudged Midleton ahead. Peters levelled with five minutes left but Leahy had the last laugh.
