WATERFORD’S hurlers were celebrating the second success of the week after last night convincing their board’s competitions control committee to postpone the June 25 and 26 weekend of club football championship fixtures.

Along with manager Davy Fitzgerald and his selectors, three players pleaded the case to have the matches deferred until after the July 10 Munster final against Tipperary or Clare. Several of Fitzgerald’s panel were expected to line out for their football teams next week. Last year, the Clare native unsuccessfully appealed to have the same round of fixtures put back before the Munster final against Cork.

He felt the games compromised the panel’s preparations for the provincial decider, which eventually went to a replay.
