Angry Corofin push for changes to provincial venues and referees
They have tabled motions for tonight’s Galway county board convention, looking for changes to be made regarding venues and the experience of referees.
The Galway champions, who are still deciding whether to appeal the increase this week in the fines dished out by the Connacht Council, want a ban on clubs hosting provincial games.
Their controversial Connacht final against St Brigid’s took place at the Roscommon club’s grounds at Kiltoom, which is a venue which had county status.
Corofin, who had a player and selector banned for a month and had their fines increased on appeal this week by €500 to €5,600, say that no team should play a provincial championship match on their home ground regardless of the county status of the ground.
Corofin have also tabled a motion regarding the status of referees, having been critical of the experience of Mayo official Liam Devenney who was in charge of their controversial Connacht final last month.
“They should have, as an absolute minimum, refereed a senior club championship final in their home county,” says the motion.
