Wave goodbye to the city

Tommy Barker reports on the next best thing to living at sea

Up at the top of the converted, former Grand Hotel in Crosshaven, is apartment No 12, The Grand. And, in comparison terms when compared to most other one-bed apartments in the Cork market, No 12 is, indeed, quite grand.

First, it’s sort of up at penthouse level at the top of this Victorian building which has engrossing views of the water, over the boat club and its marinas (the famed RCYC, the world’s oldest, as they’ve been known to claim,) and there’s always boats to watch, or to listen to as rigging snaps in the wind, and as sails furl and unfurl.

Selling agents for this one-bed, Sherry FitzGerald, say the apartment has a balcony overlooking the marina, and space that has been well-tended since its 2001 conversion.

In that decade, seaside Crosshaven has continued its steady rise to year-round commuter location, with services on the rise, and beaches to hand.

Just past No 12’s entrance area is an 18’ by 15’ lounge/dining room, with balcony access, arched windows and a mansard-type roof with exposed beams and a feature fireplace: the latter is for effect only, as it doesn’t function, and heating throughout is electric.

There’s a compact or galley style kitchen midships, with an en suite bedroom to the back of the building. In addition, there is access to an attic for storage.

VERDICT: Sail now on.
