Set sail for Asgard Cove on banks of Shannon, you’ll get life off to a flyer

WITH a site on the banks of the Shannon estuary, Asgard Cove in Limerick’s Loughill West is a place to come home to, by car, ferry, boat or by seaplane — the nearby village of Foynes made its name for just such an aircraft.

In fact, the 1939 to 1945 wartime era was a high point for Foynes, when it was the fulcrum point for North Atlantic crossing celebrities and VIPs. The likes of Bob Hope, Gracie Fields and Humphrey Bogart used the likes of the Boeing B314 Yankee Clipper, which had its own honeymoon suite, to make the crossing and splash down on the Shannon.

Chef Joe Sheridan even invented the Irish coffee here in Foynes, in 1943, to help thaw out passengers after the flights and give them what, in effect, became a first taste of Ireland.

Maybe that welcome can be laid out for house callers to Asgard Cove, a modern build, on a good site with estuary frontage, as it has its own bar space created in the hallway.

The four-bed 2,800 sq ft house has been put up for sale with local agent Sherry FitzGerald Colm O’Donovan, who seeks €650,000 for the place which doesn’t need a penny spent on it.

Many of the rooms have great views of the waterways, and its passing craft as they head up to Limerick port and city. It has lots of windows throughout and with several bay window features, such as in the formal dining room, with dark wood fireplace, and the family living/TV room.

A more formal living room, with white marble fireplace, also has views through a square side bay, off to the left of the entrance hall which has a parquet floor and space enough for a piano, and a small private bar.

Other features include three of its four bedrooms with their own en suite bathrooms, the main bathroom has a Victorian bath and extensive tiling, and there’s a gallery-style landing on the upper level, with feature bay triple window in the master bedroom. The kitchen has creamy painted wood units and granite, plus an island and range stove cooker, Neff appliances and pull-out larder.

Loughill is on the N69 road between the towns of Foynes and Tarbert, with a car ferry service at Tarbert across the waters to Co Clare via Killimer, with the mouth of the Shannon yawning beyond.
