Commercial use beckons for Abbeyfield House

A commercial future use almost certainly beckons for Abbeyfield House, being sold on behalf of a charity on Cork city’s Curraheen Road, right opposite the Melbourn Road junction.

The former care home for the elderly is being auctioned by Darragh Taaffe of Keane Mahony Smith, who says the 4,000 sq ft single story building has around 16 rooms, including eight or nine en suite bedrooms.

In clean order, on a quarter acre site, it guides at €350,000, and could suit education uses (CIT is close-by), as accommodation for students, or for medical uses, says the agent.

The local authority has had long-term plans for a new inner relief road practically alongside toward the Bandon Road, with land set aside for that route next to Abbeyfield and also next to one of the Bishopstown Credit Union branches.

Abbeyfield House was run by a local committee under the auspices of the UK-based Abbeyfield Society, which runs over 600 sheltered housing units in Britain and further afield. This one is due for sale by auction on May 23.
