Unfair broadcasting attack on Congressman Paul Ryan

Like many people I had never heard of Congressman Paul Ryan until he was announced as Mitt Romney’s running mate.

Since then I have done the usual wiki investigation and discovered that Mr Ryan appears to be a decent, honourable human being who has had to deal with a degree of personal tragedy in his life, not least discovering his father had died in bed of a heart attack at a young age.

Not being a regular listener to RTÉ I was shocked on briefly tuning in to the station last Sunday and hearing an individual being roundly sneered at and criticised as an all round bad egg. There were no dissenting voices. Initially, one assumed that perhaps the source of the vitriol may have been Pol Pot or even Adolf Hitler, so intense was the disdain/hatred. But the target was actually Paul Ryan. The poison was broadly directed at his Catholicism, and his opposition to abortion.

Is it too much to expect the State broadcaster to adopt a degree of professional balance in covering the US elections — the question is rhetorical!
