Palestinian victims

It’s good to see Nurit Modai of the Israeli Embassy admitting (Letters, Jul 6) that Palestine originally comprised today’s Israel, Gaza and the Occupied West Bank.

Indeed, before the violent influx of Jewish settlers, indigenous Muslim and Christian Palestinians formed the vast majority of the population of what was then officially Mandated Palestine. The ethnic cleansing in 1948 by Jewish settlers banished over 750,000 Palestinians from their homes.

If Israel has so much freedom of speech and the rule of law, why are there over 10,000 Palestinians, many children, locked up in Israeli jails without trial?
