AS the son of a father who was deaf for most of his life (he died in 1981), I wish to thank and congratulate Tom O’Connor of Blackpool’s Reel Picture cinema in Cork for his introduction of English subtitles for the deaf.
It is so simple and so brilliant an idea that one wonders why it has not been thought of before.
Such subtitles would enhance the lives of thousands of deaf people throughout the English-speaking world. If Hollywood has any sense of history it will automatically produce future films with English subtitles and award Mr O’Connor an Oscar for showing the way.
