The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that Ian Bailey could not be extradited to France in connection with the Christmastime murder of Sophie Tuscan du Plantier in 1996.

That ruling may bring the current instalment of the saga to a conclusion, but a whole range of disconcerting questions remain unanswered.

The sharpest of these focus on the role of investigating gardaí — how gardaí continued to focus on Mr Bailey despite the fact that the DPP rejected their evidence on a number of occasions; witnesses who say gardaí brought undue pressure on them; and why relevant DPP files were not released for so very long.

The du Plantier family were disappointed with yesterday’s ruling, but they are not by any means the only ones seeking answers to difficult questions.
