DIY: Q&A

Q. How can I clean my dishwasher without harsh chemicals and keep it smelling reasonably well the rest of the time?

A. Vinegar is a fantastic disinfectant and a powerful grease killer. Pour about 250ml of neat white vinegar into the machine and run it through a full cycle empty. Do this once a month.

Q. When I clean silver with commercial polish it always seems to leave a lingering taste on the forks and knives.

A. Put aside the chemistry and make a simply paste up with baking soda and water. Slather it onto the silverware with a cloth, working gently and rinse. The silver will gleam.

Q. What would be a good natural freshener for my bathroom?

A. Simple sprays made up of essential oils can be used all over the house. This one is recommended for a nice clean, relaxing smell with a slightly sophisticated back note. 25 drops of peppermint, 10 drops of sandalwood, 5 drops of lavender. Place the drops into about 500ml of water in a recyclable plastic spray bottle and use as needed.
