’Worst street in Ireland’ to be repaired

It’s been dubbed the worst street in Ireland, inflicting broken bones on pedestrians and a lot of damage to vehicles.

But that’s about to become a thing of the past because within the next fortnight work will start on a €2.47m upgrade of footpaths and the main road leading through Buttevant, Co Cork.

It came to a head last year when due to the uneven surface a lorry shed its load close to a primary school. Locals staged a mass protest which held up rush-hour traffic in the main street, which is part of the main Cork-Limerick road.

But instead of motorists honking their horns in anger at the protesters they sided with them, many pointing out that their cars had been damaged on the moonscape surface.

Locals even issued a cartoon showing vehicles getting sucked into massive potholes.

The good news came as Cork County Council signed off a contract this week with Priority Construction which will undertake the work.

The N20 Buttevant Town Scheme is planned to improve the existing road and streetscape within the town.

Around 1.5km of road will be completely refurbished.
