A man in his early 80s was killed in a single vehicle crash on the outskirts of Cork City yesterday.

The single-vehicle accident happened on the Glanmire-Knockraha road near Glenmore Stores at about 2.30pm.

The driver of the vehicle was the sole occupant of the car and was named locally as Richie Browne, a retired plumber who lived at Marble Park, Riverstown, Glanmire.

He was declared dead at the scene and his body was transferred to Cork University Hospital for an autopsy. The road remained closed and diversions were put in place for several hours to facilitate a forensic collision investigation.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact Glanmire Garda station on 021 4821002, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111, or any Garda station.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old man was killed in a road crash in Meath. The single-vehicle crash occurred at Dunheeda, on the main Kingscourt to Drumconrath road, at about 12.30am yesterday.

The man was severely injured and taken to Our Lady’s Hospital Navan, where he was pronounced dead later. Gardaí have appealed to witnesses to contact Navan Garda Station on 046 9036100, the Garda Confidential Line or any garda station.
