Three US tourists hurt as car flips over in Cork city crash

Two American tourists had to be cut from a car after it flipped over on its side on a busy street in the north side of Cork city. The accident occurred when the car in which they were travelling clipped the rear wheel of a parked car on Gerald Griffin St, Blackpool, yesterday afternoon.

The Opel Astra, a rental car, ended up on its side. A number of fire brigades and ambulances attended the scene. GardaĂ­ from Watercourse Road garda station were also in attendance.

It’s understood one of the three occupants of the car managed to free themselves, but cutting equipment was required to assist the remaining two. They were taken by ambulance to hospital where their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A garda spokesperson said the three tourists were American nationals of Chinese origin. The accident took place at 2.30pm outside Chan’s Chinese takeaway. A worker in Chan’s said the damaged parked car belonged to him. It’s thought the three tourists were due to return to America tomorrow.
