Tesco announce annual €1m fund for local good causes
TV presenter Kathryn Thomas was on hand at the Tesco Fleet St store in Dublin today to help launch the initiative and is calling on all local good causes in Ireland to get involved.
Every six weeks, each Tesco store will donate up to €1,000 (€500 in smaller stores) between three local good causes in its community. Customers will decide how the funding is shared by voting for their preferred cause in store. Up to 3,500 local good causes in Ireland will receive a donation through the Tesco Community Fund over the next year.
From today, every time customers shop in their local Tesco store, they will receive a token of goodwill to place in the donation box of the local good cause they would most like to support.
Every six weeks, the number of tokens is counted and up to €1,000 is distributed proportionally between three local good causes. The more tokens a local good cause gets the larger share of the donation they will receive.
Tesco is today calling on customers, local good causes, charities, schools, youth and sports groups from across the country that could benefit from donations to get involved by completing a nomination form in their local Tesco store.
Henry Dummer, Marketing Director, Tesco Ireland, revealed the scheme was part of Tesco's determination to positively contribute to each community in which they operate.
"Tesco Community Fund will enable us to do even more to support local communities and we are calling on all local good causes, community groups and charities to get involved by popping into their local store to complete a nomination form.”
Tina Roche, CEO, Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI) commended Tesco Ireland on the launch of the Tesco Community Fund.
“The availability of €1 million to community and charity organisations is particularly significant at this time given the decline in funding and tough circumstances facing the sector."
