Sinn Féin calls for an all-island soccer team
The party has also claimed Brexit opens up a “unique opportunity” for a united Ireland.
Launching Sinn Féin’s United Ireland Discussion Document, MEP Matt Carthy said an all-island State would lead to economic growth and would benefit agriculture, exports, investment, and sport.
“There are no advantages for a small island of 6.4m people on the edge of Europe in having two separate tax regimes, legal systems, and competing economic development programmes.”
The party also argues a united Ireland would have a significant sporting benefit.
“Irish teams are stronger and better when they are all-Ireland teams. All-Ireland rugby teams have won Grand Slams and Triple Crowns, boxers have had international successes, Irish golfers are leading the way in that sport,” the document says.
“Support for an all-island soccer team is growing. It makes no sense to have two ‘national’ teams competing on the international stage and splitting the talent pool that exists. We are stronger, better and more successful together.”
Among the other propos is an Irish National Health Service, which would be free at the point of delivery.
