Racing’s royalty gather for Nina’s nuptials

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

It was all about pedigree as racing royalty joined forces in one of the weddings of the year.

Nina Carberry took time out from being one of Ireland’s premier jockeys to marry Ted Walsh Jr at her local Church of the Holy Trinity, in Ratoath, Co Meath.

Ted is the son of renowned former jockey, successful trainer, and TV analyst Ted Sr, while multiple champion jockey and Irish Examiner columnist Ruby is his brother.

His sister Katie, like Nina, has experienced the thrill of riding winners at the Cheltenham festival and so friendly are the pair that Katie was bridesmaid for the joyous occasion.

Ruby was best man and revealed in the build up to the day that while he would have liked to embarrass his younger sibling a bit more when giving his speech, the fact Ted Jr had gone easy on him when the roles were reversed prevented him from exposing the really juicy stuff.

Ted proposed to Nina in Paris last June, just two months after Nina became only the second woman to ride the winner of the Irish Grand National.

Piloting Organisedconfusion, trained by her uncle, Arthur Moore, she was following in the footsteps of her father Tommy, and her brothers Paul and Philip, who had been successful in the race previously.

Punters are accustomed to winning when they place their hard-earned cash on the Carberrys and Walshes but the likelihood is that the odds on any offspring from this union of blue bloods being a future champion jockey will be very short indeed.

The happy couple held their wedding reception at The Lodge restaurant in the Tayto Theme Park, which is situated in Kilbrew, just outside Ashbourne, Co Meath.

Among the guests who partied into the night were racing personalities JP McManus, Enda Bolger, Noel Meade, Tamso Doyle Cox, and Charlie Swan.
