Over 100 jobs set to be created in technology sector

MORE than 100 jobs are to be created in the technology sector following two separate announcements in Limerick and Dublin.

US company ON Semiconductor in Limerick is to create almost 70 jobs, while a further 30 jobs are being created at software development firm Misys.

ON Semiconductor plans to invest about €13 million to expand its design centre in Limerick.

The move is aimed at enhancing its research and development (R&D) &capabilities for power efficient solutions for use in computing and consumer applications. The investment is set to create 69 jobs over the next four years.

In Dublin, Misys is creating 35 jobs by establishing a new R&D team for the company, which employs some 100 people.

The jobs boost comes as an industry-led survey by MIDAS among microelectronic firms indicated Ireland has the ability to create 2,000 jobs in the sector over the next five years.

The industry is already a significant employer and major contributor to the economy, employing more than 8,000 people in over 50 companies. Over 25% of the roles are in R&D.

MIDAS chairman and director of ON Semiconductor John Blake said there needs to be increased focus on the provision of support for start-up companies in the sector.

“With the history of support and investment from the FDI community, there is a very strong tradition of excellence in the microelectronics sector in Ireland. This has subsequently spawned a vibrant start-up community which now includes indigenous companies that range from high potential start-ups to companies that are now exporting and operating at a global level,” he said.

“High end start-ups will be the engine of growth for Ireland’s economic renewal and the microelectronics sector is already well positioned to spearhead these efforts.”

Jobs Minister Richard Bruton welcomed the announcement and said the Government is determined to take advantage of the country’s potential in the sector.
