Lucky Stryker to create hundreds of jobs in Cork

The Stryker Corporation is expected to make a formal announcement of its plans this week to build the new facility at Carrigtwohill, east Cork.

The company was founded by Michigan-based orthopaedic surgeon Dr Homer Stryker in 1941 and employs more than 25,000 people worldwide, with around 1,200 of them work in three plants in Ireland.

The corporation has two plants at the IDA site in Carrigtwohill, where it manufactures minimally-invasive surgical instruments and hip replacements, and currently employs around 700 people. Another 500 are employed in a factory in Raheen, Limerick.

The new Carrigtwohill facility, which is expected to be built before the end of the year, will be a centre of global excellence and it’s understood that part of its remit will be to produce hip and knee replacements with 3D laser printing technology.

Earlier this month Fortune magazine named Stryker Corporation as 19th of the best 100 companies in the world to work for.

Local Fine Gael TD Tom Barry said he had learned of the plans last Friday after employees were briefed by senior executives at the Carrigtwohill plants.

“This will be another tremendous boost for Cork and the country. Stryker already have firm roots in Carrtigtowhill and these will be high-end jobs,” Mr Barry said.

He said that the wage packets earned by the new workers will give a lift to the whole local economy.

“At this moment, we are starting to make significant inroads into unemployment and by the end of next year it’s forecast it will be down to 8.5%. The moves by Stryker will make up for the dissapointment of losing the Amgen biotech plant, which was also to be built in Carrigtwohill,” Mr Barry said.
