Homeless man asked to be arrested

A homeless Cork man was so desperate to get arrested that he decided to commit a bizarre crime, going behind the counter of a busy pharmacy and rummaging through boxes for D10 sleeping tablets.

Homeless man asked to be arrested

Jason Landy had come to the attention of gardaí a short time before he turned up at Blackrock Hall pharmacy off Skehard Rd.

Landy had no place to stay and asked gardaí to arrest him. His solicitor, Eddie Burke, said yesterday that Landy had told gardaí he would do something stupid just to get arrested.

Inspector Michael McGuire said the crime committed by Landy later that day was bizarre. “He entered the pharmacy and went behind the counter. He repeatedly asked members of staff for D10s and went rummaging through boxes behind the counter.

“He was unable to find them. A law-abiding citizen who was in the pharmacy at the time approached Mr Landy and the gardaí were called. Nothing was taken.”

Landy ended up getting his wish as he was arrested and taken into custody that day, April 1, and remanded in custody since.

Judge Leo Malone imposed a five-month jail sentence on Landy, originally from Rope Walk, Blackrock.
