Minister of state for tourism and sport Michael Ring performed the ceremony at Derrynane House, Caherdaniel, Co Kerry.

Built largely to O’Connell’s design in the 1820s, the property, located in Derrynane National Historic Park, was presented to the people of Ireland by his descendants in 1964. It has an unparalleled collection of furniture, paintings, books and memorabilia associated with O’Connell.

The house and its contents gives a unique insight into the life of the champion of Catholic Emancipation and the times in which he lived, said Mr Ring.

“It is a stunning example of our rich natural and cultural heritage,” he said. “It is the authentic historical experiences, rooted in the real lives of our ancestors, such as are to be found here in Derrynane, that provide visitors with memorable experiences and brings a holiday to life.”

Mr Ring also said Derrynane House was well-positioned to benefit from the Wild Atlantic Way.

More than 60% of overseas visitors say that Ireland’s history and culture were key factors in their decision to holiday here, he said.

“That is why Fáilte Ireland has moved towards developing large, iconic signature programmes that will stand out internationally and give Ireland greater ‘wow’ factor overseas. The Wild Atlantic unique places such as Derrynane are a vital part of our rich heritage.”

The house had 23,000 visitors last year.
